What keeps us motivated?
Understanding motivation isn’t too difficult. Motivation is the process of stimulating people to work in a desired way to achieve their goals. Some of the main psychological factors that stimulate people are money, success, fame, work satisfaction, recognition, and teamwork.
Motivation can not only be useful but inspiring. When we are faced with a difficult task or situation we often feel discouraged and lack the motivation to move forward. This can often lead to a lack of driving force to accomplish any task. And when you are trying to run and grow your business, having a low level of motivation can mean the difference between success and failure.
The key to maintaining a high level of motivation is to learn to have a positive attitude about your own abilities. The two major contributors towards this are:
- What expectations you have for yourself?
- What value do you place on achieving your goals?
The more value you place on finishing a task, the more motivated you will feel. If you don’t place any value on your goal or task, it will only result in a lack of motivation.
There are a number of ways to keep yourself motivated
Firstly, be honest and realistic in assessing your abilities. Stop thinking that you have to be the best in everything. No one is perfect. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but you will need to learn what you’re good at and what you’re not so good at. This will help you to improve your skills and capabilities, which in turn will help you to stay motivated.
Secondly, if you fail at anything, don’t beat yourself up. Try to keep a positive attitude especially in situations that are out of your control. Also, don’t underestimate yourself when you are faced with challenges that you think you can’t handle. Always focus on the things you can control and look for ways of doing things differently to help you achieve your goals.
Thirdly, be honest assessing your own performance. If you think you gave 100 percent but you still did not achieve your goals, then change your tasks instead of giving up on your strategy.
Lastly, be responsible for your own behavior. Don’t make excuses or blame others when things don’t go as planned. Instead, take the time to develop your skills so you can improve your results next time. Avoid self-doubt. Instead, take responsibility for your own actions and keep moving forward. This, in turn, will help you to stay motivated as you grow your business.
How to stay motivated when running your own home business
It happens gradually and almost goes unnoticed. You’re getting very little done and you don’t feel like working as hard as you used to. That’s your motivation slowly slipping away.
It’s not necessarily because you’re lazy, or you don’t have the skills necessary to get things done. However, you’re beginning to feel guilty which only fuels the fires of self-doubt. It’s a never-ending cycle.
Having a home-based business we consider ourselves lucky to be working from home. We know being our own boss has its benefits and perks like flexible hours, no commuting and not having to answer to anyone other than yourself. Along with these benefits also comes the responsibility of running and growing your business and even though we know this, the fact is that business motivation can decline significantly over time for even the most dedicated individual. In fact, one of the biggest challenges we have is how to stay motivated.
Think back to when you first started your business, you were overflowing with passion, enthusiasm, energy and there was no stopping you, but lately, you find yourself wondering where your passion went. The good news is that there are many things you can do to re-ignite the passion and motivation you once had even if you are facing insurmountable challenges.
Take a break
One of the first things you should do is to take time to re-energize. No matter how determined and focused you are, there are times when your motivation will decline and you’ll need to recover. A simple way to achieve this is by taking a break from whatever you’re doing.
This might simply mean taking a walk, hanging out with friends or watching a funny movie so that you can have a good laugh. The reason for taking a break from your routine is to clear your head and regain your focus.
Create boundaries for yourself. In regular jobs, there are certain boundaries that we have come to expect and accept. We have lunch breaks, work hours, days off and vacation time. When working on your own home business, it is very important to set similar boundaries to stay focused and on track.
How to stay motivated even when you're in a slump
There are times when everyone experiences motivational slumps where they just don’t feel like doing anything, despite the fact that there are many tasks to be accomplished. There is just no “will power” to keep moving forward.
The good news is that even when there is a lack of motivation there is still that strong desire and hope to succeed. But we must find ways to keep moving forward even when we lack motivation.
One strategy is to simply switch your way of thinking, from the negative to the positive. Negative thoughts only hold you back, especially when it comes to running a business. While this may not seem like a big deal, taking the time to recognize negative thoughts and thinking more positively can really help increase your motivation and your desire to succeed.
Another good strategy for staying motivated requires a commitment to never giving up. Even though it can be easier to just throw in the towel it is important to find ways to continue moving forward even if it takes longer than anticipated. To accomplish this, try to focus on how you will feel after you have achieved your goal as it will help to increase your motivation.
Even though maintaining your motivation levels will have its ups and downs and is one of the hardest things to do, if you can find the drive inside of you to keep moving towards your goals, you will become much happier and confident.
When you are trying to run and grow a business it’s important to strive for success and one way you can achieve that is by totally immersing yourself in the task at hand. This is a great inspirational technique that helps you keep a positive attitude even when you are faced with many challenges.
Lastly, when you are feeling overwhelmed and less motivated try taking smaller steps instead of large strides. Being unmotivated is something that can take its toll on your life and your business. It leads to feelings of inadequacy which only triggers the cycle of self-doubt and tends to make you feel like doing even less. This sort of mental block can make it impossible for you to think straight let alone get anything done.

When you work from home it is important to keep your workspace tidy and clutter free. Take the time to develop a workable routine and use a calendar to schedule tasks and appointments. It doesn’t matter whether it is paper or electronic calendar. Try using a color-coding system to indicate what type of appointments or tasks you have scheduled. When you have a timeline to follow you will get a lot more done and you will feel a lot less overwhelmed.
